Freshman Coaches

Darren Best   

Darren Best is in his seventh year of coaching for Minnetonka and his second year as freshman head coach. Darren has a degree in mathematics from St. Olaf College where he spent four years as a linebacker for the Oles. He is a math teacher at the high school, works with the Get Connected program for ninth graders, and doubles as a DJ in his spare time. Darren lives in Waconia with his wife Christine.



Matt Breen   

Matt Breen is a fourth-year coach and math teacher at Minnetonka High School. Matt will be coordinating the freshmen defense while working primarily with the defensive backs. Matt started for three years and was two-time all-conference at Willmar High School. He also played football for four years at St. John's University. In his free time, Matt enjoys in-line skating and watching and competing in most every sport. Matt lives in Victoria with his wife Christine.



Curtis Eischens   

Curtis Eischens enters his 7th year of coaching football at Minnetonka and his 2nd year of coaching the Freshman Wide Receivers. He is entering his 21st year of coaching football. He has previously coached the Varsity Wide Receivers and Outside Linebackers. Curtis has also coached at the University of Southern California football camps for the last seven summers. He received his B.A. from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and his M.A. in Curriculum of Arts in Education from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Curtis and his wife Jody live in Excelsior with their children Joey Brown, Sydney and Conner Eischens.



Josh Frie   

Josh Frie enters his first season with the Minnetonka Football Program after four years of teaching mathematics and coaching football, wrestling and golf at Falcon High School near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He will be working primarily with the Linebackers and the Offensive Line. Josh has a degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and is a new teacher in the Minnetonka High School math department. He and his wife Jessica (and dog Drake) are currently looking for a house in the area.



John Hersch   

Jon Hersch enters his 4th season with the Minnetonka Football Program after coaching with Dave Nelson at Blaine High School for several years. Jon played football at Osseo High School and St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He was an English teacher and head track coach at Blaine High School and Champlin Park High School for 25 years until retiring from full-time teaching. Jon will coach freshman offensive backs. He and his wife, Gretchen, live in Medina, and have two daughters, Jennifer (& Andy) Matysik, and Sarah (& Bjorn) Helgeson, and two grandchildren, Joey, age 4, and Maria, age 2.



Erik Sill   

Erik Sill enters his 3rd season on the freshman football staff as the linebackers coach. He is looking forward to contributing to the program's continued success and strong tradition. Erik graduated from Luther College in 2003 where he was a member of the men’s basketball team for 3 years. Erik is head of the business department at MHS and in the off-season is a varsity assistant coach for the boy's basketball program. He will also be running in his 3rd Twin Cities Marathon in October.



Chad Thorp   

Chad Thorp enters his second season on the Minnetonka staff as Freshman Defensive Line coach. Chad is a 2003 graduate of Augsburg College and a four year letter winner in football. He is in his third year teaching the embedded Health program at Minnetonka High School and also works with the junior varsity girls hockey and softball teams. Chad lives in Hopkins with his wife Megan.
