Sophomore Coaches

John Croyle - 18th Year at MHS

10th Grade Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks Coach

Alma Mater(s): Wayzata High School, Bethel University

Coach Croyle enters his 18th year of coaching at Minnetonka and serves on the sophomore staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.  Prior to this Coach Croyle has been in a variety of roles in the program, including - Varsity Offensive Coordinator, Varsity QB Coach, Varsity WR Coach, and Varsity Safeties Coach.

Coach Croyle is a 2006 graduate of Bethel University with a BA degree in History and Social Studies Education. John was a three-year starter as a wide receiver at Bethel under Steve Johnson and earned All-MIAC honors there.

John is a Social Studies teacher at Minnetonka High School.

Colin Beil - 3rd Year at MHS

Defensive Backs Coach

  Alma Mater(s): Minnetonka High School ('17); Bethel University

This is Colin Beil’s 3rd season coaching at MHS.

Colin is a MHS 2017 grad and played football for the Skippers as a safety and long snapper. He was the 2016 recipient of the Maxie McGee Scholarship.

Colin is a graphic designer and creates most of the graphics for Minnetonka Football social media. In his free time, he enjoys golf, pickup basketball and playing with his dog, Lambeau.

 

Jason Bell - 18th Year at MHS

Offensive Line Coach

Alma Mater(s): Columbia Heights High School, Hamline University, Saint Mary’s University

This is Jason's 18th year with the Skippers. He is a graduate of Columbia Heights High School, where he was a four-year letter winner and co-captain. Jason played football at Hamline University, where he again was a four-year letter winner while earning degrees in Anthropology and Social Studies with a Licensure in Education; he obtained a Masters in Education from Saint Mary’s University in 2013.  During his time at MHS, Jason has coached offensive line at the Freshmen and Varsity levels, and has coordinated the offense and special teams for the Sophomores.

Jason teaches Social Studies, including multiple AP classes, at Minnetonka High School.

Joe Carlson – 7th Year at MHS

Wide Receivers Coach

Alma Mater(s): Thomas Jefferson High School, Bethel University, Texas A&M University.

Joe Carlson enters his 7th season at Minnetonka. Coach Carlson serves as the wide receivers coach on the sophomore team. Joe is a 2017 graduate of Bethel University, where he played quarterback for 4 years and graduated with a degree in Math Education. Joe is a Math teacher at Minnetonka High School. He  and his wife Kelly live in Richfield, with their daughter Ella.

Brennan Dickinsen –9th Year at MHS

Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Line Coach

Alma Mater(s): Augusta High School (Wisconsin), Minnesota State University Mankato

Coach Dickinsen is entering his 9th  year on the sophomore staff and his third as the defensive coordinator. He was the defensive coordinator at Mankato East Middle School for one season, and offensive coordinator for the freshmen and defensive assistant for the sophomore team at Bloomington Kennedy for two seasons before coming to Minnetonka.

As a graduate from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2012 with a degree in Elementary Education, he played linebacker at Minnesota State University Mankato from 2009-11. Before football, he also played basketball at the University of Minnesota-Crookston from 2007-09. 

Brennan has been teaching nine years in the district and currently in 4th grade at Deephaven Elementary. His wife Mandie, sons Dominic (6), Chandler (4), and baby girl on the way reside in Carver.

Careino Gurley - 16th Year at MHS

Linebackers Coach

Alma Mater(s):  Glen Mills Schools, PA, Minnesota State University - Mankato

Coach Gurley enters his 16th year of coaching at Minnetonka and serves on the sophomore staff as the linebacker coach.  Prior to this Coach Gurley has been in a variety of roles in the program, including sophomore WR coach,  varsity WR coach, varsity T.E. coach, and varsity outside backer coach.

Coach Gurley is a 2001 graduate of Minnesota State University - Mankato with a B.A. degree in Social Work and earned his Social Work licensure in 2016.  Careino is the Academic and Student Support Coordinator and advisor of the Minnetonka Men of Color group.  He and his wife Felicia have two kids, both former students and football players at Minnetonka Careino Jr. (2014) and Carvon (2019).  They reside in Minneapolis.

Joe Sherry - 2nd Year at MHS

Running Backs/Tight Ends Coach

Alma Mater(s): St. Michael-Albertville High School, Metropolitan State University, University of Minnesota

Coach Sherry enters his 2nd year of coaching at Minnetonka and serves on the sophomore staff as the running back coach.  Prior to this Coach Sherry served as an assistant coordinator for the St. Michael-Albertville youth football program.

Coach Sherry is a 2019 graduate of Metropolitan State University with a BA degree in Economics and a 2022 graduate of the University of Minnesota with a MA degree in Elementary Education. 

Joe is a 5th grade teacher at Deephaven Elementary School. He resides in St. Louis Park.

Mitch Benson

Assistant Coach: TEs & RBs

Alma Mater(s): Buffalo High School, University of Minnesota-Duluth 

We welcome Mitchell Benson to his first year coaching at MHS.

Prior to joining the Skippers, he served as head coach of the freshman program at Detroit Lakes High School for two seasons. 

Mitch is a 2016 graduate of Buffalo High School and earned his B.S. Ed. from UMD in 2021. He is excited to begin coaching and teaching in the district. 

Mitch’s pastimes include disc golf, hiking, riding rollercoasters, attending concerts and making music with friends.
