Coach Mattox

John Mattox - 1930-2020

The Minnetonka Football Community lost a dear friend in the passing of long-time coach John Mattox on Sunday, September 13th.

Coach Mattox coached the Varsity Offensive Line at MHS for 15 years.  "Mad Dog" loved our great game and loved the players who played it even more.  He was a colorful man who made all who played for him feel special.  He was one of those people who, if you met, you would never forget!

Coach Mattox began coaching in 1947 with Wells Memorial Settlement House where he won the City League Football Championship - while still attending West High School.  He attended Junior College in Santa Ana, California, where he lettered in basketball.  Mattox served as President and Regional Director for the Minnetonka Athletic Association and was the Head Coach of the Excelsior Jets when they won six MAA Championships.  His coaching career took him to St. Louis Park, Blake, and Kennedy before he began coaching for the Skippers.   Coach Mattox was credited with inventing the Nerf football!
